Sustainability
Description: Green development is an integrated approach to building that focuses on environmental sensitivity, resource efficiency, and a commitment to community. Pappas Enterprises, a developer based in Boston, partnered with world renowned architect Nader Tehrani of Office dA, and design firm 160over90 to work on the construction and branding of the Macallen building, one the countrys leading green residential buildings. Stephen Penning of 160over90 will discuss the firms role in branding the Macallen building and will offer insight into the development of green marketing materials for this project.
In addition, we will be joined by Romy Scheroder of Satya, a Philadelphia based clothing and accessories boutique for men and women. The focus of Satya is to bring accountability to an industry that has for many years been neglecting social accountability in its production and promotion of goods.
Two factors at the forefront of Romys mission are that there are sustainable processes for the production of materials used and that there are no human rights violations in the production of the garments. Romys aim, whether in her art or as an entrepreneur, is to promote ethics and values.

Review/ReCap of the Event:
When I first heard about this event, I worried that it would be another meeting where designers patted each other on the back and agreed on everything. Thankfully, I was wrong.
Held at the Philadelphia Design Within Reach, the sustainability chatroom featured a representative from Mohawk paper, a lead designer at 160over90, and the owner of Satya, a local sustainable clothing boutique, each discussing their eco-friendly projects.
Beyond the typical one-way lecture, this round-table discussion allowed audience members to voice their often conflicted views about sustainability. While mostly polite, the conversation did get heated as designers argued over the following questions: Who's to blame for global warming? Is sustainability just another hollow buzzword? How much power do designers really have?
Most of us realize that the earth is in bad shape, but if we only focus on doing something--anything--we're in danger of going in the wrong direction. For this reason, it's important that designers have these types of forums where we can look at this problem from multiple angles, and consider a variety of solutions. That is, after all, what we're good at.

These are the questions to be discussed:
QUESTION SET 1:
For Designers: How do you feel when you are handed a wire frame?
For UX people: How do you feel when your wire frame is not adhered to?
QUESTION SET 2:
For Designers: How do designers feel about user testing? Do they find it to be valuable or a waste of time? How do they feel when they are watching their designs being tested? How do they feel when they have to change something in their design based on the results of a user test?
For UX people: Do you always consider usability test results as "the truth"? Have you ever felt that the results you gathered for a design that tested badly were incorrect?
QUESTION 3:
For UX only: It seems like both IA's and usability people do user research. What is the difference between the two roles and their deliverables?
QUESTION SET 4:
For UX: Who owns the hierarchy of the page, IA's or designers? Hierarchy can be created in other ways besides mapping off sections of a page in a wireframe. Design elements like color and typography can also be used to create emphasis and hierarchy as well.
For Designers: How best can an IA contribute to the project, without constricting your creative ideas?

Diversity
Description: Bob Dylan once said "The times they are a-changin", but is design as a profession changing with the times? Learning about diversity and its benefits is essential to people in Philadelphia with a fast growing minority population and a large number of baby boomers retiring in the near future. The large group of people retiring is making room for a new group of designers with new ideas. This is a topic that affects everyone so its our job to educate ourselves about these changes.
Like most major cities, Philadelphia is a "melting pot" made up of different groups of people including African Americans, Asians, Caucasians and Hispanics. Due to issues like cultural views of a career in the visual arts, cities like Philadelphia have seen a fairly small change of diversity in our design community. We will discuss the issues leading to the lack of diversity in Philadelphias design firms and the benefits of working with a diverse group of designers to achieve a variety of solutions.
Come and celebrate our differences with AIGAs Diversity Chat+Room and let your voice be heard. This is your chance to discuss the topic of diversity with local designers and share your experiences. Research the subject and review the links below to prepare yourself for an honest discussion on the topics surrounding designers.
Special Guest, Andrew Bass of the AIGA National Diversity Task Force will be visiting us from NYC to lead the discussion.

the Visual vs. the Usable
How do they cross paths?
As visual designers of one kind or another, our paths sometimes cross with user experience professionals. (information architects, interaction designers, user interface planners/testers, etc.) And if it hasn't happened to you yet... plan for it soon!
For a lot of us, our process is changing. Our clients are expecting us to not only collaborate with these user interface professionals, but to be educating them on how our collaborative process gives them a better end product with clearly quantifiable results! And believe it or not, if done properly, the result can be successful and rewarding for all concerned!
At times though, we all know that this can be difficult. There is a lot that both professions can learn from each other in order to work better together. This is why AIGA Philadelphia has decided to hold a joint meeting with PhiCHI. (the Philadelphia region's chapter of the Computer-Human Interaction group - http://www.cis.drexel.edu/PhiCHI/)
For this first joint meeting, we decided to give members of both organizations a closer look at the User-Centered Design (UCD) process of two local agencies, Avenue A | Razorfish and GSI Commerce. Each company will explain their design process from start to finish and show sample deliverables of their work. You will get to see how their design and user-experience teams work together.
